We welcome you to the  vast island nation of Indonesia, one of the most alluring, mysterious, beautiful and diverse countries in the world. It is with great pride that we welcome you to the 23rd Viking Cup.
 
Since the (in) famous announcement of Myanmar as the next host country at the great Viking cup in Bangkok last year, there has been a lot of work taking place in Jakarta to try to arrange a great Viking cup on Jakarta Vikings home soil.
 
We therefore welcome you to Jakarta, a city of hardcore beauty the capital city of Indonesia. We are proud to welcome you to 'our' city and hope you will enjoy your stay here.
 
Many years has passed since i joined my first Viking cup in 1990 in Jakarta where only 3 teams participated (Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta) and nobody could have predicted that the Viking Cup would become such a great Scandinavian cultural treasure taking place now almost 25 years later.
 
Viking Cup is one of the highlights of the year, and we look forward to meeting with old friends , new friends and to keep all the proud traditions alive.
 
We hope you will enjoy the Viking Cup in Jakarta. The surroundings are a bit different than usual but we hope you will come with an open mind and we assure you that you will leave as richer - and more experienced - person after the cup.

Jakarta hints - where to go and how to get around

Let's face it: Jakarta is big and very confusing - if you are new to Jakarta stay in groups, use Blue Bird taxis - Do not try to jump into random busses or walk around not knowing where you are.
 

Accomodation

The Sultan Hotel Jakarta has a long and reputable legacy since it first opened its doors in 1976, as the Jakarta Hilton International Hotel. Located in Senayan, the strategic junction of Jakarta's Central Business District 'Golden Triangle', The Sultan Hotel is a landmark in the heart of Jakarta.

As usual, we present the annual beer competition - here we find the sissy teams and get the men separated from the herd....

Startup party at Sultan

We had a hell of a startup party last night at Sultan…. Jan Gramm initiated by stating why Vikings are still contemporary a thousand years after we ruled Europe.

After that we had great speeches, film etc. from the different countries of brave Viking football players.

Obviously in best Viking style the bar was open and loads of alcohol was served to make sure that the Friday games will be played in fair style.

Fun thing will be to observe how many did not find their bed after the first party.

Getting to Sentul - The football pitches

If any of you or your family would like to go to the football pitches Friday and Saturday by other means than the bus routes already scheduled, then here are a few hints:

Sentul is located 45 km South of Sultan Hotel with moderate traffic which can be expected during Easter calculate 1 hour for the trip - you find the toll road towards Bogor and Ciawe and follow that road southwards.

Match Format

  • 9 teams will be placed in 2 groups according to the Draw
  • Group A will have 5 teams. Group B will have 4 teams.
  • Each Group Winner and the 2nd place in each group advances to the Semi Finals on Saturday (A1, A2, B1, B2)
     

The remaining 5 teams from the Group Stage enter the "Plate & Wooden spoon playoffs" on Saturday (A3, A4, A5, B3, B4)
 
Matches played during ‘Plate Group playoffs’ will - together with matches played during the group stage on Friday - decide the Plate Cup winner and the Wooden Spoon loser.

Location: Sultan Hotel in the lobby in front of the ballrooms.
 
Viking Village open the bar at 15.00 - beers, drinks, good conversation can and will be provided - meet new and old friends, make bets on the results and get a good start on the tournament.
Thu, 2012-04-05 19:00 Opening ceremony, team intro, draw, entertainment

Location: Ballroom Sultan Hotel.
 
Welcome speech followed by team draws, team presentations - which we hope will be entertaining, local band will be playing.
Fri, 2012-04-06 08:00 to 18:00 Group games

45 Kilometers south of Jakarta - out in the mountains, fresh cool air and as little pollution as you will be able to find around a metropolitan like Jakarta - Sentul City is located.
 
Sentul offers major golf clubs, polo tracks, horse back riding and even a racetrack - and of course a couple of football pitches (JJC - Jakarta Japan Communities) that Viking Football Club were able to get their hands on.
 
All games will be played in this area - there are 2 football pitches and we should be able to keep schedule.
Fri, 2012-04-06 19:00 Pub Night

As something new this year, we will try to be creative about friday evening.

as you can see from our website and as you will see from the programme Jakarta is full of restaurants and clubs. however it can also be a hassle to get around. and as experienced in previous viking cups, we often lose each other friday evening. so as something new we have organised a "pub night" on friday evening. this is a very simple concept, two of the pubs who support the viking cup "EASTERN PROMISE" AND "MURPHYS IRISH PUB" have basically given us a very good deal.

We will to the best of our ability try to divide the teams between the two pubs for dinner and we can then aim to meet up at a venue to be announced later. As both pubs are located in same area, this makes a lot of sense, logistically as well.

The cost for the food on friday will be around IDR 50,000/head (USD 11), we believe this is fairly inexpensive. Jakarta Vikings will pay this amount up front for you, but please be prepared to hand over the amount we pay for you, at the captains meeting.

We kindly ask you to let us know in advance if you NOT in for this arrangement, otherwise we will make necessary arrangement for you friday evening based on your team sign up sheet.
Sat, 2012-04-07 08:00 to 16:00 Finals

Games continue same place as Friday - in Sentul.
 
Group plays will be concluded and finals will initiate.
 
If any of the family members would like to enjoy Jakarta during the morning and noon, they will be able to reach Sentul by taxa - estimated travel time 1 hour and estimated fair IDR 150.000 (USD 20).
Sat, 2012-04-07 19:00 Gala dinner, price ceremony, beer drinking contest. other entertainment

Location: Ballroom, Sultan Hotel
 
After a tiresome couple of days of football and Jakarta town visits we invite to gala dinner at the hotel.
 
Trophies will given, winner speeches and loser speeches will performed - the highlight of the whole event will take place: BEER DRINKING COMPETITION, this is where prior results on the football pitch does not count any more.
 
The Big Donny Band - rock'n roll and 80s classics - A special guest will perform during the event.
